Unit of Measure Mappings
How to map Axiom unit labels to your stores unit of measure.
Introduction
Unit of measure mappings are an essential feature that allows you to connect standardized measurement units from the Axiom system with your store's specific measurement units. This mapping system ensures that product measurements are consistently translated between different systems, maintaining accuracy across your inventory and purchasing processes.
What Are Unit of Measure Mappings?
A unit of measure mapping creates a relationship between:
- Axiom Unit Labels - These are standardized measurement units used by the Axiom platform
- Store Unit of Measures - These are the measurement units specific to your business
For example, you might map the Axiom unit label "KGM" (kilogram) to your store's unit of measure "KG" or "KILO".
Why Are Unit of Measure Mappings Important?
Unit of measure mappings provide several benefits:
- Consistency: Ensures that measurements are interpreted correctly across different systems
- Accuracy: Prevents errors when converting between different measurement units
- Flexibility: Allows your store to use familiar measurement units while still communicating with the central system
- Data Quality: Improves overall data quality by standardizing how measurements are handled
Types of Units of Measure
Your store can define units of measure in four main categories:
- Weight - For measuring how heavy items are (e.g., kilograms, pounds)
- Volume - For measuring the space items occupy (e.g., liters, gallons)
- Length - For measuring how long items are (e.g., meters, inches)
- Dimensionless - For counting items without a specific measurement (e.g., each, piece)
How to Use Unit of Measure Mappings
Viewing Existing Mappings
You can view all your current unit of measure mappings in the system. Each mapping shows:
- The Axiom unit label (what the central system uses)
- Your store's unit of measure (what your store uses)
- A description explaining the mapping (optional)
Creating a New Mapping
To create a new unit of measure mapping:
- Select the Axiom unit label you want to map from
- Select your store's unit of measure you want to map to
- Add an optional description to help others understand the mapping
- Save the mapping
Updating an Existing Mapping
If you need to change a mapping:
- Find the mapping you want to update
- Change the store unit of measure as needed
- Update the description if necessary
- Save your changes
Deleting a Mapping
If a mapping is no longer needed, you can delete it from the system. Deleted mappings can be restored if needed.
Bulk Import via CSV
For efficiency, you can import multiple unit of measure mappings at once using a CSV file with these columns:
mapped_from
: The Axiom unit label codemapped_to
: Your store's unit of measure codedescription
: Optional explanation of the mapping
How Mappings Work Behind the Scenes
When your purchasing system receives product data from Axiom, Axiom has already automatically translated the Axiom unit labels to your store's units of measure using these mappings. If no mapping exists for a particular unit label, the system will use the Axiom unit label code as a fallback.
Best Practices
- Create mappings for all commonly used units: Ensure all frequently used measurement units have proper mappings
- Use clear descriptions: Add helpful descriptions to make mappings easier to understand
- Maintain consistency: Try to use consistent naming conventions for your store's units of measure
- Review periodically: Regularly check your mappings to ensure they remain accurate and up-to-date
