Categories

Extended information on product and variant categories.

Overview

Use the category field to include your own product categorization system in your product data. Unlike the shop product categories, which use a store operator-defined collection of categories, you choose which value to include for the product category. The values that you submit will be used to map your category taxonomy to that of the shops you join.

When to use

Format

Guidelines

Follow these guidelines to make sure that you submit high-quality data for your products.

Minimum requirements

These are the requirements that you'll need to meet to show your product. If you don't follow these requirements, we could reject your product.

  • Separate multiple levels in a category by having each level as an element in the array. For example: ["Home", "Women", "Dresses", "Maxi dresses"].
  • Only one category is permitted per product.

Best practices

These best practices can help you go beyond the basic requirements to optimise your product data for performance.

  • Have one root node for all product categories, e.g. "Home".
  • Submit this attribute for all products. When you submit a product type, we can better understand what you're selling, and when we understand what you're selling, we can help connect buyers with your products.
  • If your own product categorisation includes multiple levels, include all the levels. For example, if your products belong in "Maxi dresses", list the full array: ["Home", "Women", "Dresses", "Maxi dresses"].
  • Use the full 'breadcrumb' information. Wherever possible, we recommend that you include more granular categories as it classifies your product more precisely. For example, ["Books", "Non-fiction", "Sports", "Baseball"] is better than ["Baseball"].
  • Don't have product variants in a different category to the parent product.
